Wayne Memorial Hospital Security Incident: What Happened?
Wayne Memorial Hospital is providing notice of a data security incident that may have exposed the personal and medical information of 163,440 people, according to a report submitted to the Maine Attorney General’s Office.
During the incident, which was discovered on June 3, 2024, an unauthorized third party accessed the Jesup, Georgia hospital’s computer systems, encrypted certain data and left a ransom note on the network. A subsequent investigation of the Wayne Memorial Hospital data breach determined that the unauthorized actor had accessed a limited number of computer systems between May 30 and June 3, 2024.
A letter from the hospital’s attorneys states that while the impacted data varies for each individual, the incident may have involved names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, state ID numbers, user IDs and passwords, financial account numbers, and credit or debit card details. In addition, the letter says that Medicare or Medicaid numbers, health insurance member numbers, healthcare provider numbers, diagnoses, medical histories, treatment and prescription information, and lab test results or images may have been exposed.
Notices were mailed to affected individuals on August 27, 2025.
