Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation Data Breach:
Lawsuit Investigation
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed in light of the data breach affecting Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation.
As part of their investigation, they need to hear from individuals who received a notice stating they were impacted.
Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation (WPS) is mailing data breach notices to 946,801 individuals whose personal information may have been exposed as part of the massive MOVEit data breach last year. WPS is a contractor that handles Medicare claims and related services for The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal agency that manages the Medicare program.
The Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation data breach stemmed from a vulnerability in MOVEit, a file transfer software used by WPS during the Medicare claims process. Unauthorized access to files occurred between May 27 and May 31, 2023, before Progress Software, MOVEit's developer, disclosed and patched the vulnerability on May 31, 2023. Though initial investigations in 2023 by WPS found no evidence of unauthorized file copying, a subsequent review in May 2024 confirmed that some files had been compromised and contained patients' personal information, including names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, mailing addresses, genders, hospital account numbers, dates of service, and Medicare identifiers or health insurance claim numbers.
According to a press release issued by CMS, the breach may have impacted Medicare beneficiaries whose information was collected to manage claims and potentially other individuals who received health care services at providers audited by CMS.
If your information was exposed in the breach, attorneys want to hear from you. You may be able to start a class action lawsuit to recover compensation for loss of privacy, time spent dealing with the breach, out-of-pocket costs, and more.
A successful case could also force Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation to ensure it takes proper steps to protect the information it was entrusted with.
