The Wall Street Journal reported that the Berkeley Research Group data breach involved a hacker impersonating an IT worker to deploy Chaos ransomware, demanding and receiving a ransom for alleged data destruction, though a report from DataBreaches.net warns that cybercriminals' claims that stolen data has been destroyed "should not be believed."
Berkeley Research Group reported the data breach to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on April 30, 2025, which indicates that protected health information may have been exposed.
