North Shore University Hospital Security Incident: What Happened?
On May 22, 2025, North Shore University Hospital reported a privacy breach impacting patients of its Northwell Health Sleep Disorders Center in Great Neck, New York.
In April 2025, the Nassau County District Attorney charged a former employee of the Sleep Disorders Center, Sanjai Syamaprased, 47, with unlawful surveillance after he allegedly recorded individuals in restrooms using a camera hidden in a fake smoke detector. The unauthorized recordings are believed to have taken place between July 2023 and April 2024. The DA’s Office revealed that the employee purchased the device in August 2022 and used it to surreptitiously film potentially hundreds of patients, including a child. The employee reportedly removed the camera after his shifts to access the footage.
In an online notice about the security incident, North Shore University Hospital explained that it had to delay notifying patients until the former employee's indictment. The hospital has now alerted all visitors to the Northwell Health Sleep Disorders Center between the date the former employee allegedly purchased the recording device and when he was barred from the premises in April 2024.
In a report to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, North Shore University Hospital Sleep Disorders Center indicated that 13,332 people may have been affected by the privacy breach.
According to media reports, a spokesperson for Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has confirmed that the office is also investigating Syamaprased after he was barred from the Weill Cornell Center for Sleep Medicine on E. 61st Street. A security bulletin reported stated that if Syamaprased attempted to enter the building to "please call [a Weill Cornell official] immediately and shut down any elevator he is attempting to use," the Daily News reported.
