Monmouth Security Incident: What Happened?
On March 13, 2026, Monmouth University President Dr. Patrick F. Leahy informed students about a cybersecurity incident, according to student-run newspaper The Outlook. In his message, Leahy explained that after unauthorized access to Monmouth's systems was discovered, response protocols were activated, cybersecurity experts were involved, and notifications were sent to the FBI and the Department of Education.
Subsequently, in a statement to Comparitech, Leahy stated that Monmouth is working to determine what information was compromised and will notify those affected.
DailyDarkWeb reported on March 26 that the Pear ransomware group claimed responsibility for the Monmouth data breach, stating it accessed 16 TB of sensitive data. Based on reported evidence of the breach, compromised material may include financial records, HR files, partner and vendor data, students' confidential information, grades, personal and health records, minors' data, email correspondence, and files from OneDrive and Dropbox.
