Well Child Security Incident: What Happened?

Well Child, a nonprofit healthcare organization partnered with school districts in Tennessee and Mississippi, has reported a data breach that may have compromised students' personal information.

According to a notice posted to its website, Well Child discovered a cybersecurity incident on its computer network on June 1, 2026. Following an investigation with cybersecurity professionals, the organization determined on June 5 of this year that files potentially containing sensitive personal information were taken from a temporary file storage server. According to Well Child, Vision Screening Reports, Vision Screening Data, Available Students Lists and Parents’ Evaluation of Developmental Status assessment documents were stored on the server at the time of the incident.

Information potentially contained in these files includes names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, provider names, diagnoses, assessments and testing results, treatment dates, billing or procedure codes and Social Security numbers.

The Well Child data breach was also reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on August 14, 2026.
