Class Action Lawsuit Alleges Taylor Farms, Taco Bell Failed to Warn Consumers of Cyclospora Contamination

Taylor Farms and Taco Bell have been hit with a proposed class action lawsuit amid a nationwide cyclosporiasis outbreak allegedly linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce Taylor Farms produced and supplied to the fast-food chain.

The 14-page lawsuit against Taylor Farms and Taco Bell comes as the United States continues to grapple with the outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic intestinal infection that spreads through food or water contaminated with feces. Per the complaint, federal public health officials have linked the outbreak to iceberg lettuce that Taylor Farms produced and supplied to certain Taco Bell locations.

The case alleges that the defendants failed to disclose that the iceberg lettuce, reportedly sourced from a single supplier in Mexico, was contaminated with the dangerous Cyclospora parasite, rendering it adulterated, unfit for human consumption, and worthless.

As of July 21, 2026, the lawsuit relays, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed more than 1,600 cases of cyclosporiasis and over 140 hospitalizations across dozens of states and is investigating thousands of suspected cases. The complaint says that the affected iceberg lettuce was distributed to Taco Bell locations throughout Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia.

Per the CDC, cyclosporiasis symptoms—which include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, bloating, gas, nausea and fatigue—typically manifest within one week of consuming food or beverages containing Cyclospora, although symptoms may last anywhere from days to a month or longer.

The case claims that Taylor Farms deceptively sold and distributed contaminated iceberg lettuce while representing that its foods are wholesome and suitable for consumption, while Taco Bell served the affected lettuce to consumers as an ordinary, safe ingredient in its menu items.

“Every class member suffered the same economic injury the moment the transaction closed: each paid full price for food that was worth less than represented, and in law was worthless because it could not be sold for human consumption,” the class action lawsuit summarizes.

Taylor Farms’ contaminated lettuce is adulterated and cannot be lawfully sold, class action argues

The complaint says that Taylor Farms is a leading supplier of fresh lettuce and vegetables for national restaurant chains and sells packaged salads at major retailers such as Walmart, Whole Foods and Target. The filing notes that Taylor Farms has sold the iceberg lettuce at issue with the express or implied representation that it was safe and fit for human consumption, and Taco Bell, in turn, “served that lettuce to consumers as an ordinary, safe ingredient” in its food.

According to the lawsuit, federal law stipulates that food that bears or contains a poisonous or harmful substance—such as the Cyclospora parasite—or is prepared, packed or held in unsanitary conditions is adulterated. Adulterated products cannot be lawfully introduced into interstate commerce and have no lawful market value as human food, the suit stresses.

Plaintiff and the class paid for wholesome food fit for human consumption. They received adulterated food that could not lawfully be sold and was worth less than they paid, and in law was worthless as human food. The difference between the price paid and the value received is the class's economic loss.”

On July 17, Taylor Farms issued a voluntary recall for all iceberg lettuce grown in central Mexico and distributed between June 29 and July 16, 2026, citing suspicions that it was the source of the cyclosporiasis outbreak. In addition, Taco Bell voluntarily removed potentially contaminated lettuce from its nationwide supply chain on July 17, the case says.

Both the recall and voluntary removal of products confirm that the lettuce was not fit for sale, the complaint argues.

Lawsuit says Taylor Farms has a history of contamination, illness outbreaks

The filing shares that the 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak is not the first instance of contamination traced back to Taylor Farms. In 2013, the suit says, public health officials linked a multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak that afflicted hundreds of people to Taylor Farms salad mix.

Moreover, the case says that Taylor Farms in 2024 was named as the likely source for an E. coli outbreak that was linked to onions served at restaurants nationwide, an outbreak that caused over 100 illnesses, dozens of hospitalizations, and one death.

The complaint asserts that the prior outbreaks should have put Taylor Farms on notice of parasitic and bacterial contamination in its supply chain, but the company nonetheless failed to take necessary measures to mitigate the risk of contamination in its lettuce products. 

Who is covered by the Taylor Farms lawsuit?

The Taylor Farms class action lawsuit looks to cover all individuals in the United States who, from May 1, 2026 through the date of final judgment in the litigation, purchased one or more of the following:

• Food sold at Taco Bell restaurants that contained iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms that was subject to removal or recall; and/or
• Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce and lettuce-containing products distributed through retail or foodservice channels that were subject to removal or recall.
