Up to $9.25M Penn Medicine Settlement Resolves Lawsuit Over Alleged Disclosure of Patient Info

Penn Medicine has agreed to an up to $9,250,000 settlement to conclude a class action lawsuit that alleged the University of Pennsylvania Health System embedded tracking pixels in the myPennMedicine patient portal that secretly transmitted patients’ private information to third parties without consent.

The up to $9,250,000 Penn Medicine class action settlement received preliminary approval from the court on June 12, 2026. The deal covers all individuals who, between January 23, 2021 and January 23, 2023, accessed the myPennMedicine patient portal and had a Pennsylvania address on file at the time of access.

Court documents state that the Penn Medicine settlement covers approximately 756,723 people.

The court-approved website for the Penn Medicine class action settlement can be found at UPHSPixelSettlement.com.

Penn Medicine settlement class members who submit a timely, valid claim form can receive a cash payment of up to $15.

The final amount of each class member’s cash payout may decrease, depending on the total number of valid claims filed, among other factors.

To submit a Penn Medicine settlement claim form online, class members can head to this page and enter the unique ID and PIN found on their copy of the settlement notice. Alternatively, class members can download a PDF claim form to print, fill out, and return by mail to the settlement administrator.

All Penn Medicine claim forms must be submitted online or postmarked by September 16, 2026.

Additionally, as part of the settlement, Penn Medicine, which maintains that it is not currently using the Meta pixel on PennMedicine.org, has agreed to not use analytics and advertising technologies on PennMedicine.org for two years, unless its web governance committee determines their use is consistent with applicable law.

The court will determine whether to grant final approval to the Penn Medicine settlement following a hearing on November 12, 2026. Compensation will begin to be distributed to class members only after final approval has been granted and any appeals have been resolved.

The Penn Medicine class action lawsuit claimed that the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, as owner and operator of the University of Pennsylvania Health System, failed to obtain consent before deploying tracking pixels on the Penn Medicine patient portal that allegedly shared patient information with third parties such as Meta and Google, in violation of the Pennsylvania Wiretapping and Electronic Surveillance Control Act.
