General Motors Settlement Resolves Lawsuits Over Alleged ‘Shift to Park’ Defect in Certain GMC Acadia, Chevy Vehicles

A class action settlement has been reached to resolve a consolidated lawsuit that claimed certain GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Blazer, Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Traverse and Chevrolet Volt vehicles suffer from a so-called “shift to park” defect that General Motors has allegedly failed to repair under applicable warranties.

The settlement resolves allegations in two class action lawsuits against GM that claimed defective shifters can cause the vehicles at issue to fail to recognize when they are placed in park. The class action suits asserted that this causes the vehicles to display an erroneous “shift to park” message on the dashboard when the driver attempts to turn off the ignition, preventing the cars from being shut off.
The deal covers all consumers who purchased or leased a new 2017-2019 GMC Acadia, 2019 Chevrolet Blazer, 2016-2019 Chevrolet Malibu, 2018-2019 Chevrolet Traverse or 2016-2019 Chevrolet Volt in Ohio, or who purchased or leased a new 2017-2018 GMC Acadia in Tennessee; who sought a repair from a GM dealer regarding the “shift to park” issue during the warranty period; and who, in response, either received no repair attempts at all or received repair attempts that were not a silicon-free replacement shifter assembly or silicon-free shifter control wire harness.

As part of the deal, all class members are entitled to receive a pro-rated $500 cash payout, and owners or lessees who paid out of pocket to repair the “shift to park” issue are also eligible to receive an additional payment of up to $375 as reimbursement, the website says.
According to the site, GM has records of some but not all class members who sought repairs for the issue during the warranty period but did not receive silicon-free replacement parts.
Consumers who do not appear in GM’s warranty data must submit a timely, valid claim form to receive the $500 payment, the website notes. Class members who appear in this warranty data do not need to do anything to receive the cash benefit.
Similarly, class members for whom GM has no record of out-of-pocket repair expenses must file a timely, valid claim form with supporting documentation to receive reimbursement, the website relays, while those who are included in the automaker’s warranty and customer pay data will be automatically reimbursed for their out-of-pocket costs as reflected in GM’s records, the site shares.
According to the website, supporting documentation consists of either an invoice and/or other combination of repair documents, such as a repair order or service record, showing the vehicle identification number (VIN), the date of repair for the issue, a description of the work performed, proof of the total amount paid and the facility that performed the repair.

Claim forms must be submitted online or by mail by August 19, 2025.
The settlement agreement with GM received preliminary court approval on February 20, 2025. It is now up to the court to decide whether to grant final approval to the terms of the deal at a hearing on August 22, 2025.
