Roblox Corporation is facing a growing number of lawsuits filed on behalf of minors who allege they were sexually abused by predators on the game and that the developer is now responsible for the harm they’ve suffered.
Specifically, the suits claim Roblox has made continuous misrepresentations to parents and the public about the safety of its game—which one research firm coined a “pedophile hellscape”—and ultimately prioritized growth and profits over the well-being of young players.
Indeed, the Roblox lawsuits go so far as to allege the video game developer facilitates the sexual exploitation of young people through the design of its app and failure to implement the most basic safety protections, even when requested by its own employees.
Now, parents and guardians are taking legal action against the maker of the game—which one child protection organization called a “mainstream contributor to sexual exploitation”—seeking compensation for physical harm, emotional distress and more.
Was your child groomed or sexually abused by a Roblox predator? Were you abused by someone you met on the game when you were under the age of 18? If so, fill out the form on this page for more information. You may be able to file a lawsuit against the maker of the game for the harm you’ve suffered. What Do the Roblox Sex Abuse Lawsuits Say, Exactly?
Age and Identity Verification, Parental Consent
One of the main allegations made by the Roblox lawsuits is that the video game developer failed to implement appropriate safeguards, including age and identity verification, to keep its young audience safe from child predators.
It takes players only mere seconds to “sign up and start having fun” on Roblox; they simply need to enter a birthday and choose a username and password. Until November 2024, Roblox’s default settings essentially allowed players to, regardless of age, direct message any user within a Roblox “experience” (i.e., game) or friend request a user to begin privately communicating outside a game. The default settings have since been updated and currently prohibit users under 13 from direct messaging outside of games or experiences; they can still use the in-game public chat but require parental permission to direct message within an experience.
Because Roblox does not require users to verify their age upon signing up, however, players can easily identify that they are older or younger than they actually are—both of which can be problematic, the suits claim. According to the lawsuits, nothing prevents Roblox child predators from entering fake birthdays and posing as teens or pre-teens to befriend other young users, and children under the age of 13 can self-identify as a few years older to bypass default restrictions regarding direct communication. Furthermore, children aged 13 or older are still vulnerable to getting friend requests or direct messages in games from adult strangers, the Roblox sex abuse lawsuits say.
In comparison, with regard to communication settings, Nintendo’s kid-friendly Splatoon 3 allows players to communicate with strangers only via preprogrammed dialogue options.
Furthermore, while Roblox states that children must have permission from their parents to sign up, no checks and balances are in place to verify that permission has indeed been given, according to the Roblox grooming lawsuits.
The cases argue that, to protect children, Roblox could have required users to:
- Provide their name, email and/or phone number upon signup to help cut down on Roblox child predators making multiple anonymous accounts
- Verify their ages by uploading a picture of their ID or a parent’s ID
- Provide verifiable parental consent, including via one of the many ways outlined by the Federal Trade Commission
With regard to parental approval, an employee insinuated that Roblox considered implementing additional safeguards but ultimately chose not to over fears such a requirement would drive users away. The lawsuits add that additional safety features that could cut down on grooming and sexual abuse on Roblox include providing transcripts of children’s communications to parents, implementing an identity check to prevent registered sex offenders from signing up, banning IPs and media access control (MAC) addresses of accounts associated with Roblox child predators, and creating different apps for adults and children. It has also been argued that investing in more U.S.-based human moderators and prohibiting minors from any open chat could also help cut down on Roblox grooming and sexual abuse but that such changes would likely “stall growth or increase costs.”
The lawsuits argue that Roblox continues its success based on its “constant” and “false” promises that the app is safe for kids, statements that directly contradict the company’s alleged knowledge about predators freely roaming the game looking for vulnerable children.
App Design and Robux Currency System
According to the suits, the design of Roblox, including that users can create their own games—sometimes sexually explicit ones—and make them available on the platform, along with its in-game digital currency system, facilitates the exploitation of young people.
In Roblox, children can create their own games and play games made by other users and third-party companies. Roblox games can include simulation games (e.g., working in a pizza place or theme park), role-playing games (e.g., pet adoption, life-simulation) and adventure games (e.g., exploring dungeons, collecting dragons). In essence, Roblox gives players the tools they need to create their own worlds and experiences that can then be shared with others—sometimes with disastrous consequences.
For instance, in August 2020, Fast Company published a lengthy investigative piece on Roblox’s “condo games,” virtual experiences described by the publication’s editor as house parties “where the parents are out of town”—that is, characters can undress and engage in sex acts. Reports have also surfaced of virtual strip clubs on the platform along with games titled “Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe,” “Escape to Epstein Island” and “Diddy Party.”
Even seemingly innocuous virtual worlds can become wildly and inexplicably inappropriate. For instance, in mid-2018, a North Carolina mother spoke with a local news outlet about how her seven-year-old’s avatar was raped on a Roblox virtual playground.
The suit argues Roblox has effectively given the public “unfettered access” to build whatever world they want, without proper oversight or safeguards in place, allowing for a toxic environment where obscene content flourishes and pedophiles can “hunt, groom, and sexually exploit” children.
Making matters worse, the lawsuits claim, are Robux, which can be purchased with real money and used by players to buy avatar accessories, animations, weapons, unique abilities and more. Unfortunately, kids have reported feeling the need to obtain and spend Robux to keep up with their peers, sometimes leading to “casino-level spending” and a willingness to do “anything for Robux.”
Indeed, there have been multiple news reports of Roblox child predators allegedly offering children Robux in exchange for sexually explicit photos or videos.
The lawsuits claim that Roblox could have helped protect children by preventing strangers from sending Robux to child accounts.
Who Can File a Roblox Sexual Abuse Lawsuit?
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are pursuing lawsuits on behalf of individuals who were abused by a sexual predator they met on Roblox while under the age of 18. They are accepting claims in which survivors were:
- Raped
- Suffered an attempted rape
- Sexually assaulted
- Sex trafficked
- Sent or coerced into sending sexually explicit photos or videos
- Groomed, including instances in which the survivor required mental health care or other medical treatment or had their school performance (grades, attendance, extracurricular, etc.) suffer
According to the lawsuits, Roblox grooming and abuse typically escalates as follows:
- The predator identifies and targets a vulnerable child, often pretending to be the same or a similar age, on the app.
- The predator convinces the child to move the communication to a different medium—this may include texting or communicating on another app, such as Snapchat, Facebook or Discord.
- In some cases, the predator may then try to arrange an in-person meeting, potentially leading to harassment, kidnapping, trafficking, violence or sexual assault.
The lawsuits claim that Roblox predators have coerced and blackmailed children into sexual situations by offering Robux gift cards, threatening harm to the child or their family, and saying they will publish nude photos of others online and claim the child they’re speaking to is the person in the images.
What’s Involved in Filing a Roblox Grooming Lawsuit?
If you decide to pursue a Roblox sexual abuse lawsuit on behalf of yourself or your minor child, your attorney will begin to compile the case by gathering relevant information and documentation. This may include basic contact details, copies of relevant medical or school records, and details regarding the Roblox grooming and sexual abuse.
Your attorney may ask questions such as:
- How did the abuser first contact the survivor?
- How did the relationship with the Roblox predator progress?
- What apps or platforms did the Roblox predator use to communicate with the child?
- What was the frequency, location and details regarding the Roblox sex abuse?
- How did the Roblox abuse impact the survivor’s school performance?
- How did the Roblox sex abuse impact the survivor’s mental health?
- How did the Roblox abuse impact the survivor’s quality of life?
- Was medical or mental health treatment sought?
Once your Roblox sex abuse attorney has gathered sufficient details and documentation, they will begin putting together what’s known as a complaint. This is a legal document that, when filed with the court, officially begins your Roblox sexual abuse lawsuit. The complaint will outline the parties filing the case (the plaintiffs), the companies being sued (the defendants), why the defendants should be held responsible and the relief the plaintiffs are seeking.
After your Roblox sex abuse case is filed with the court, your attorneys and the attorneys for Roblox will go back and forth in an attempt to resolve the case, whether that means it gets dismissed, results in a Roblox settlement, or goes to trial; however, jury trials are increasingly rare in civil cases.
It’s also possible that the lawsuits involving Roblox sex abuse get consolidated to a single court before a single judge to help efficiently manage the litigation, ensure consistent rulings and save time and money for all parties involved. In this situation, a handful of attorneys will be named to oversee pre-trial proceedings and resolve the litigation. This may involve selecting a small number of lawsuits to proceed as “bellwether trials,” a “test run” to see if juries side more often with the plaintiffs or with Roblox. If most of the bellwether trials go the way of the plaintiffs, Roblox might decide to reach a global settlement to avoid the risk and uncertainty of jury trials in the remaining lawsuits. If they win the bellwether trials, a Roblox settlement may not be established.

Is This a Roblox Class Action Lawsuit?
No, attorneys working with ClassAction.org are handling Roblox sex abuse lawsuits on an individual basis, and not as a class action. This is because they believe the harm suffered by Roblox users is significant enough to warrant individual lawsuits.
Typically, class action lawsuits are filed when a large group of individuals has suffered a relatively small harm (e.g., they spent $12 on a laundry detergent that wasn’t as “natural” as it claimed) and, financially, it wouldn’t make sense to bring an individual case for the loss (i.e., $12 per product purchased).
For instance, a proposed Roblox class action lawsuit was filed in May 2021 on behalf of Roblox users who purchased content on the platform that was later deleted under the guise of “content moderation.” A $10 million Roblox settlement was later reached to help compensate those who were not refunded for deleted content.
Lawsuits filed over Roblox sex abuse will involve more serious and costly losses; rather than seeking compensation for deleted in-game content, as was the case in the class action, the lawsuits will look to recover money for mental harm, medical bills, and similar damages.
In other words, if you or your child was groomed or sexually abused while under 18 by someone on Roblox, you will need to hire your own attorney and file your own individual case.
