Communications Data Group Settlement Resolves Class Action Lawsuit Over 2025 Data Breach

Communications Data Group (CDG), Duo County Telephone Cooperative, Cumberland Cellular, and Home Wireless have agreed to a class action settlement to resolve a lawsuit that alleged the billing vendor and phone service providers failed to protect personal information from a February 2025 cyberattack.

The Communications Data Group class action settlement received preliminary approval from the court on August 12, 2026. Eligible for the settlement are all United States residents who received a Notice of Data Incident letter from CDG or Home Telecom relating to the data breach.

Court documents state that the private information of approximately 137,059 people may have been compromised in the data incident.

Class members who submit a timely, valid claim form can receive up to $5,000 for documented out-of-pocket losses incurred due to the data breach. This benefit covers losses from identity theft or fraud and costs for professional fees, credit repair services, freezing/unfreezing credit, credit monitoring, mileage, and more.

Class members must submit proof, such as receipts, to receive a documented-loss payment.

In addition, class members who submit a claim for documented losses can elect on their claim form to receive three years of CyEx one-bureau credit monitoring, which includes identity theft insurance.

Class members can elect on their claim form to receive the credit monitoring without submitting a documented-loss claim.

In lieu of a documented-loss payment or credit monitoring, class members can file a claim form to receive a $45 cash payment, with no proof required.

To submit a Communications Data Group settlement claim form online, class members can head to this page and enter the login ID and PIN found on their copy of the settlement notice. Alternatively, class members can download a PDF claim form to print, complete and return by mail to the settlement administrator.

All Communications Data Group settlement claim forms must be submitted online or postmarked by November 10, 2026.

The court will determine whether to grant final approval to the Communications Data Group data breach settlement following a hearing on November 16, 2026. Settlement benefits will be made available to class members only after final approval has been granted and any appeals have been resolved.

The Communications Data Group class action lawsuit alleged that the billing vendor, as well as Duo, Cumberland, and Home Wireless, failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures to protect private information from a February 2025 data breach.

Per court documents, personal information that may have been compromised in the cyberattack included names, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license information, bank account information, and Social Security numbers.
