The BYU Broadcasting class action settlement received preliminary approval from the court on July 18, 2025 and covers anyone in the U.S. who, between November 12, 2022 and May 9, 2025, had a Facebook account, had a registered BYUtv account (i.e., login credentials) and viewed one or more videos on www.byutv.org.
The court-approved website for the BYU Broadcasting settlement can be found at GarciaVideoPrivacyClassAction.com.
BYUtv settlement class members who submit a timely, valid claim form will be able to receive a pro-rata, or equal-share, portion of the $1,548,495 settlement fund after the payment of legal fees, administrative costs and a lead plaintiff award.
To file a claim form online, class members must visit this page of the settlement website and log in with the unique ID and PIN found in their copy of the settlement notice.
Alternatively, a PDF claim form is available to print, fill out and mail back to the address listed on the first page of the form.
All claim forms must be submitted or postmarked by October 14, 2025.
BYU Broadcasting has also agreed to remove the Meta tracking software from any page on its website that includes video content and has a URL that substantially identifies the video hosted there.
A hearing is set for November 20, 2025 to determine whether the settlement will receive final court approval. Payments will be distributed to class members 45 days after final approval has been granted and any appeals have been resolved, the settlement website says.
The Brigham Young University class action lawsuit alleged that a type of data tracking software called the Meta Pixel was embedded in pages of the BYUtv website and was collecting and transmitting subscribers’ personally identifiable information to Meta without consent—in violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act.
