Suffolk County Settlement Ends Lawsuit Over Red-Light Camera Violation Admin Fees

Suffolk County, New York, has agreed to provide up to $45 million in cash payments to settle a lawsuit that alleged the county imposed an unlawful $30 administrative fee on top of fines for red-light camera violations.

The class action settlement with Suffolk County and its Traffic and Parking Violation Agency received preliminary approval from the court on August 10, 2026. Eligible to participate in the settlement are all individuals and entities who, between April 1, 2013 and the present, paid a $30 administrative fee to the county defendants for red-light camera program violations. 

The court-approved website for the Suffolk County admin fee settlement can be found at SuffolkRedLightSettlement.com. 

Settlement class members who file a valid, timely claim form can receive up to $36 for each red-light violation administrative fee they paid during the relevant time period. 

Each class member’s cash payout may be adjusted on a pro rata (proportional) basis, depending on the total number of valid settlement claims submitted. 

Class members can file a claim online by heading to this page and entering the class member ID found on their copy of the settlement notice. Alternatively, class members can download a PDF claim form to print, complete and return by mail to the settlement administrator. 

Claim forms for the Suffolk County red-light camera admin fee settlement must be filed online or by mail by December 8, 2026. 

The court will decide whether to grant final approval to the Suffolk County settlement following a hearing on December 8, 2026. Settlement money will begin to be distributed after the deal receives final approval and any appeals are resolved. 

The class action lawsuit against Suffolk County, New York, alleged that the county and its Traffic and Parking Violation Agency, beginning as early as April 2013, imposed “excess liability” on consumers for red-light camera violations. The suit claimed that although New York law limits a consumer’s liability to $50 per violation, the Suffolk County defendants charged an illegal $30 administrative fee in addition to the fine for each red-light camera violation. 

The admin fees at issue have been declared unlawful by the court, which prohibited the county from imposing the charges, the case said.
