Kline et al. v. Hyundai Motor America, Inc.
Filed: November 3, 2026 ◆§ 23-cv-00245
A settlement worth up to $1.43M ends a lawsuit that alleged Hyundai failed to honor lifetime warranties for high-voltage Sonata plug-in hybrid batteries.
Maryland
Hyundai Motor America, Inc. has agreed to a class action settlement worth up to $1.43 million to resolve a lawsuit that alleged the automaker failed to honor its high-voltage lifetime battery warranty for 2016-2019 model year Sonata plug-in hybrid vehicles, as Hyundai allegedly could not repair or replace failed HV batteries, depriving certain drivers of the full use of their vehicles.

The Hyundai Sonata plug in hybrid settlement received preliminary approval from the court on July 31, 2026.
Eligible for the settlement are all residents of the United States and the District of Columbia (excluding U.S. territories) who owned or leased a 2016-2019 model year Hyundai Sonata plug-in hybrid that, during the applicable warranty period, needed a high-voltage (HV) battery repair for which parts were unavailable and the car could not be repaired for at least 60 days.
The official Hyundai Sonata plug-in hybrid settlement website can be found at HVBatteryRepairSettlement.com.
The settlement website states that, for most class members, late 2021 through the summer of 2023 was the period during which their Sonata plug in hybrids were out of service awaiting HV battery repairs.
Hyundai settlement class members who file a valid, timely claim form and establish that they owned or leased an affected vehicle during the time that it needed a battery repair can receive a “days down payment.” The amount of each class member’s days down payment will be calculated by multiplying the number of days a vehicle spent awaiting an HV battery repair by $10 per day, which could increase to $15 per day should the total value of all claimed payments be less than $250,000.
This payout will be based on the total number of days a class member’s vehicle awaited a battery repair, as established and documented by Hyundai’s records.
To file a Hyundai Sonata plug-in hybrid settlement claim form online, class members can visit this page and enter their Sonata’s VIN. If the VIN is eligible, the claim form portal will open on the settlement website with the class member’s vehicle information already filled in.
Class members who received a deficiency notice about their claim can enter the claim ID and confirmation code from their confirmation email on the same webpage to correct their claim form and resubmit it.
Hyundai settlement claim forms must be filed online or by mail by December 28, 2026.
The court will decide whether to grant final approval to the Hyundai Sonata plug in hybrid settlement following a hearing on December 21, 2026. Settlement benefits will begin to be made available after the deal has received final approval and any appeals are resolved.
The settlement resolves a Hyundai class action lawsuit that alleged the automaker failed to honor its high-voltage lifetime battery warranty for 2016-2019 Sonata plug-in hybrid models. The suit claimed that Hyundai could not repair or replace the faulty HV batteries for extended periods of time and, as a result, left owners and lessees without the full use of their vehicles.
