$8.75M Google Settlement Resolves Class Action Lawsuit Over Alleged Chromebook Privacy Violations
H.K. et al. v. Google LLC
Filed: April 20, 2021 ◆§ 20LL00017
A settlement has been reached to resolve a class action that claimed Google unlawfully captured Illinois students’ biometric data through its GWFE platform.
An $8.75 million settlement has been reached to resolve a class action lawsuit that claimed Google unlawfully captured and stored Illinois students’ biometric data without proper notice or consent through its “Google Workspace for Education” or “G Suite for Education” (GWFE) platform, which came pre-installed on certain school-issued Chromebooks.

The court-authorized website for the Google Chromebook class action settlement can be found at GoogleEducationBIPASettlement.com.
The settlement agreement covers all Illinois residents who, while enrolled in an Illinois school, had a voice model or face model created or had the Voice Match or Face Match feature enabled in their GWFE account at any time between March 26, 2015 and May 15, 2025.
According to the official Google settlement website, eligible class members who submit a timely, valid claim form will be entitled to a pro-rated share of the $8,750,000 settlement fund, after deductions are made for taxes, administrative costs, attorneys’ fees and service awards.
To receive a Google settlement payout, class members must file a claim form by October 16, 2025.
Consumers can submit a Google settlement claim form online on this page. Alternatively, class members can download a PDF claim form or call 1-844-768-1451 to request a paper copy to return by mail.

The website says that the claim form must be completed by an adult 18 years or older and notes that parents or guardians can file a claim on behalf of a minor.
Individual payments are predicted to be between approximately $30 and $100, though the final amount could be higher or lower than these estimates and will depend on several factors, including the total number of valid claims that are submitted, the site explains.
The Google class action settlement was preliminarily approved by the court on May 15, 2025. Next, the court will decide whether to grant final approval to the terms of the deal at a hearing on October 14, 2025.
If the deal receives ultimate court approval, Google settlement payments will be issued to eligible class members within 90 days following the date of final approval, the website states. The process may be prolonged by appeals, which must be resolved before settlement payments are sent out.
In addition, as part of the deal, Google has agreed to provide notice to new Illinois GWFE users regarding its voice and face model creation and data storage and retention practices, the settlement agreement shares. The notice presented upon enrollment in Voice Match or Face Match will require the user to affirmatively consent to the feature before it is enabled, the agreement says.
The lawsuit against Google alleged that the tech giant violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) by improperly collecting voiceprints, facial templates and other forms of biometric data from millions of children without consent.
