A class action lawsuit claims Sur La Table, a cookware and dining supplies retailer, failed to protect the personal information of current and former employees during a March 2023 cyberattack.

Sur La Table has agreed to pay $550,000 to settle a proposed class action lawsuit over a 2023 data breach that exposed current and former employees’ private information.

The deal covers 40,646 people who received a Sur La Table data breach letter on or around May 24, 2023.
To receive a Sur La Table settlement payout, eligible class members must submit a valid claim form online or by mail by July 7, 2025.

Class members can file a claim form to receive up to $4,000 in reimbursement for documented out-of-pocket losses reasonably traceable to the Sur La Table data breach, such as losses relating to fraud, identity theft or credit monitoring costs. Alternatively, covered individuals can opt for a pro-rated cash payment.
Class members living in California can claim an additional cash payment of up to $100, the Sur La Table settlement website states.
The Sur La Table deal will provide all class members who submit a timely, valid claim form with two years of identity theft protection and credit monitoring services.
The deal received preliminary court approval on February 20, 2025. It is now up to the court to determine whether to grant final approval to the class action settlement at a hearing set for August 27, 2025.
Sur La Table settlement benefits and payments will only be issued to eligible class members if the deal receives ultimate court approval and after any appeals are resolved.
One initial lawsuit against Sur La Table claimed the kitchen supply company failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures, which allowed an unauthorized actor access to its computer systems between March 15 and March 25, 2023. According to the settlement site, the incident compromised names, driver’s license or state identification numbers, medical information, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and health insurance plan enrollment information.
