$12.5M Cash App Settlement Aims to Resolve Lawsuit Over Alleged ‘Invite Friends’ Spam Texts
Bottoms v. Block Inc.
Filed: December 21, 2023 ◆§ 2:23-cv-01969
Block has agreed to pay a settlement that may resolve a class action that alleged the company unlawfully incentivized users to send unsolicited texts as part of Cash App's "Invite Friends” program.
Washington
Block, Inc. has agreed to pay a $12.5 million Cash App settlement that, if approved by the court, will resolve a proposed class action lawsuit that alleged the company violated Washington law by incentivizing users to send unsolicited text messages to state residents through Cash App’s “Invite Friends” referral program.

If preliminarily approved by the court, the proposed Cash App class action settlement will cover anyone who received a Cash App referral program text message, and was a Washington resident at the time, between November 14, 2019 and the latest date that Block pulls data identifying phone numbers with Washington area codes to which an Invite Friends text was sent.
The proposed agreement, which will resolve the Cash App settlement lawsuit, will not cover consumers who clearly consented in advance to receive a referral program text, court documents state.
Block’s data indicates that Cash App users sent referral program texts to approximately 1,975,187 Washington phone numbers, according to court documents.
The proposed agreement with Cash App says the text messages may have read, for example, “Hey! I’ve been using Cash App to send money and spend using the Cash Card. Try it using my code and you’ll get $5. FVRJ1PH https://cash.app/app/FVRJ1PH.”
If the Cash App settlement is approved, eligible class members who submit a timely, valid claim form may receive a pro-rated cash payment, the settlement agreement shares. Court documents estimate that Cash App settlement payouts will be between $88 and $147 per person, though the final amount will depend on the total number of valid claims that are filed.
Class members can file a Cash App settlement claim form by mail or online through the court-authorized settlement website once it is established.
ClassAction.org will update this page if and when the official Cash App settlement website is launched.
Per the agreement, the Cash App settlement claim form will require each consumer to provide their phone number and attest that they qualify as a class member. To be entitled to a Cash App settlement rebate, a class member’s phone number must be listed in Block’s records of Invite Friends texts, the settlement agreement relays.
The plaintiff filed a motion outlining the proposed Cash App settlement details on June 30, 2025. The parties now await preliminary approval from United States District Judge Marsha J. Pechman.
The settlement website will be launched, and notices will be distributed to eligible class members, within 30 days following the date of preliminary court approval, the agreement states. Consumers will have at least 90 days from the date of initial approval to submit a claim form for Cash App settlement benefits, the document adds.
The Cash App settlement payout date will most likely occur after the deal has received final approval from the court.
