Up to $350K TED Foundation Settlement Offers Cash to Video Viewers Whose Data Was Allegedly Disclosed

TED Foundation Inc. has signed on to a class action settlement worth up to $350,000 to resolve a lawsuit that alleged the nonprofit behind the iconic TED Talks online videos unlawfully disclosed viewers’ personally identifiable information to third parties without consent.

The TED Foundation class action settlement received preliminary approval from the court on July 14, 2026. Eligible to participate in the settlement are all individuals in the United States who, from October 19, 2021 to July 14 of this year, were TED account holders and watched a pre-recorded video on TED.com or TED’s iOS or Android apps. 

The court-approved website for the TED video privacy settlement can be found at TEDVPPASettlement.com. 

All settlement class members will automatically receive two free months of TED membership, estimated to be worth at least $10. Class members who do not file a claim form will receive an email with a clickable link allowing them to claim the offer. 

In lieu of two free months of TED membership, class members can submit a timely, valid claim form to either receive a $5 pro rata cash payment or opt to donate the $5 to TED Foundation Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation. 

As part of the class action settlement, TED has also agreed to provide an affirmative consent option to U.S. account holders whose event data will be transmitted to third-party service provider Open Web, and to cease transmitting U.S. account holders’ first and last names or email addresses to third-party Mixpanel and use “reasonable efforts” to discontinue storing such data within Mixpanel.

To submit a TED settlement claim form online, class members can head to this page and enter the eight-digit claim ID and four-digit PIN found on their copy of the settlement notice. 

TED Foundation settlement claim forms must be submitted by October 26, 2026. 

The court will determine whether to grant final approval to the TED Talk settlement following a hearing on November 12, 2026. Settlement benefits will be made available after the deal receives final approval and any appeals are resolved. 

The TED Foundation lawsuit alleged that the nonprofit violated the federal Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA) by disclosing users’ personally identifiable information—namely the specific “video materials” or services they obtained from a “video tape service provider”—to third parties without informed, written consent. The suit alleged that TED disclosed account holders’ names, user IDs and email addresses along with their video views.
