Cognism Settlement Offers Cash Payouts to End Class Action Suit Over Alleged Privacy Violations

A class action settlement resolves litigation against Cognism over alleged violations of state privacy laws.
A class action settlement will end litigation against Cognism, Inc. over the sales information provider’s alleged practice of offering residents’ contact information to free trial, non-paying users, in violation of various states’ privacy laws.

The Cognism class action settlement received preliminary approval from the court on August 13, 2025 and covers residents of Alabama, California, Illinois, Indiana, Nevada, Ohio and South Dakota who are not registered Cognism.com users and whose contact profiles were viewed by a Cognism.com free-trial user at any point during the following time periods:
- Between September 20, 2020 and March 11, 2025 for Alabama, California and Indiana residents;
- Between September 20, 2021 and March 11, 2025 for Illinois residents;
- Between September 20, 2018 and March 11, 2025 for Nevada and Ohio residents; and
- Between September 20, 2019 and March 11, 2025 for South Dakota residents.
The court-approved website for the Cognism class action settlement can be found at CognismSettlement.com.
Cognism settlement class members who file a timely, valid claim form can receive one of the following cash payments, depending on the state in which they reside:
- California and Nevada residents: $22.50
- Illinois, Indiana and South Dakota residents: $30
- Ohio residents: $75
- Alabama residents: $150
To file a claim form online, class members can visit this page of the Cognism settlement website and log in with the unique notice ID and PIN found in their copy of the settlement notice.
Once logged in, a class member may instead choose to download a PDF of the claim form to print, fill out and mail back to the address listed on the claim submission webpage.
All claim forms must be submitted online or postmarked by December 10, 2025.
Additionally, Cognism has agreed, per court documents, to provide user-friendly access on its website for consumers to request that their contact information be removed from the Cognism database, and to ensure that it honors those opt-out requests.
A hearing is scheduled for December 9, 2025 to determine whether the Cognism settlement will receive final court approval. Cash payments will begin to be distributed to class members only after final approval has been granted and any appeals have been resolved.
The Cognism class action lawsuit alleged that the sales intelligence company revealed individuals’ contact information to free trial Cognism users, violating privacy laws in Alabama, California, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and South Dakota.
