Disaster recovery company Belfor South Florida and construction company Statewide Associates, Inc. are facing a lawsuit filed over allegedly unpaid wages.
Florida
Disaster recovery company Belfor South Florida and construction company Statewide Associates, Inc. are facing a proposed collective and class action filed over allegedly unpaid wages.
The four plaintiffs behind the lawsuit say they were employed as manual laborers and worked around the Florida Keys area to restore public and private property after Hurricane Irma. The case charges that other than “minor, isolated cash payments,” the workers were not paid for their labor.
The suit alleges the plaintiffs were promised six to 12 months of work and a pay rate of $15 per hour. In actuality, the laborers say they worked seven days per week for at least 12 hours each day without proper minimum and overtime wages. The case accuses the companies of making false promises in order to “entice” the plaintiffs and similarly situated laborers into performing unpaid work.
