Muscatine Power and Water has signed on to a $525,000 class action settlement, resolving a lawsuit that alleged the Iowa utilities provider failed to adequately protect consumers’ sensitive information from a January 2024 targeted cyberattack.

The Muscatine Power and Water class action settlement received preliminary approval from the court on August 10, 2026. Eligible to participate in the settlement are all individuals whose personal information was potentially compromised in the Muscatine Power and Water data breach, including all who were sent notice of the incident.
Court documents state that approximately 36,995 people are eligible for the settlement.

Settlement class members who file a valid, timely claim form can receive up to $5,000 in reimbursement for documented “extraordinary” out-of-pocket losses incurred between January 26, 2024 and October 26, 2026 due to the Muscatine data breach. This benefit covers losses from identity theft, fraud, falsified tax returns or other misuse of private information stemming from the cyber incident.
Class members can also file a claim for up to $500 in reimbursement for documented out-of-pocket losses incurred during the same time period due to the data breach. This benefit covers costs for credit reports, credit monitoring, freezing or unfreezing credit, replacing IDs, and more.
Class members must submit proof, such as receipts, to receive a documented-loss payout.
In addition, class members can file a claim for up to five hours spent addressing the Muscatine Power and Water data breach, at a rate of $20 per hour. This benefit covers activities such as changing passwords, investigating suspicious account activity and researching the cyberattack.
To file a claim form online, class members can head to this page and enter the login ID and PIN found on their copy of the settlement notice. Alternatively, class members can download a PDF claim form to print, complete and return by mail to the settlement administrator.
Muscatine Power and Water settlement claim forms must be filed online or by mail by October 26, 2026.
The court will decide whether to grant final approval to the Muscatine Power and Water data breach settlement following a hearing on December 17, 2026. Settlement money will be made available after the deal receives final approval and any appeals are resolved.
The lawsuit against Muscatine Power and Water alleged that the Iowa electricity, water and telecommunications provider failed to protect sensitive information from a targeted cyberattack in January 2024. The lawsuit claimed that the information compromised in the incident included consumer names and Social Security numbers.
