A $44M Chantix settlement ends litigation that alleged the smoking-cessation medication was contaminated with an undisclosed probable human carcinogen.
Pfizer has signed on to a $44 million class action settlement to resolve multidistrict litigation (MDL) that alleged the pharmaceutical giant made and sold Chantix without disclosing that the smoking-cessation medication was contaminated with a nitrosamine, an organic chemical compound widely classified as a probable human carcinogen.

The $44 million Chantix class action settlement received preliminary approval from the court on June 1, 2026. The deal covers all individuals and third-party payors who paid any amount of money for retail purchases of Chantix in the United States and its territories from September 29, 2015 through September 17, 2021.
The court-approved website for the Chantix MDL settlement can be found at ChantixSettlement.com.
Chantix settlement class members who submit a timely, valid claim form will receive a pro rata share of the settlement fund. The amount of each consumer’s payout will be based on how much they paid for Chantix, as documented on their claim form and supporting documents, and will not exceed the total amount they paid for the drug.
Although consumers do not need to provide documentation with their claim form, the settlement administrator may ask for additional proof supporting an individual’s claim. Acceptable forms of claim documentation include an explanation of benefits, pharmacy records, and copies of prescription records showing that the individual paid for Chantix.
To submit a Chantix claim form online, class members can head to this page. Alternatively, Chantix class members can download a PDF settlement claim form to print, complete and mail back to the settlement administrator.
Chantix claim forms must be filed online or by mail by September 14, 2026.
The court will determine whether to grant final approval to the Chantix class action settlement following a hearing on October 13, 2026. Settlement payouts will begin to be distributed only after the settlement has received final approval and any appeals are resolved.
The Chantix MDL alleged that Pfizer fell short of current good manufacturing practices in making Chantix, causing the smoking-cessation medication to become contaminated with a nitrosamine, which can increase an individual’s long-term cancer risk.
Several Chantix lawsuits were consolidated into multidistrict litigation in New York’s Southern District Court in December 2022. The parties agreed to settle the plaintiffs’ remaining claims against Pfizer in March 2026.
