Filed: January 18, 2022 ◆§ 1:22-cv-00295
A lawsuit claims Samsara captured commercial freight drivers’ biometric information without providing statutory disclosures or obtaining their consent.
Samsara has agreed to pay a $3.95 million settlement to resolve a class action lawsuit that alleged the Camera ID feature of the software company’s dual-facing dash cams unlawfully captured and stored drivers’ biometric data without proper consent.

The court-authorized website for the Samsara dash cam class action settlement can be found at DashCamSettlement.com.
The deal covers anyone who operated a vehicle in Illinois between December 16, 2016 and June 12, 2025 that was equipped with a dual-facing Samsara dash cam, and any Illinois residents not included in this group who operated a vehicle with a Samsara dash cam within that period outside the state.
To receive benefits from the Samsara dash cam settlement, eligible class members must submit a valid claim form online or by mail by September 29, 2025.

Online claim submission requires a unique claim ID, which is listed in the postcard notice issued about the deal, the site says. Class members who do not have a claim ID must submit a registration form to receive one before they can complete a settlement claim form online.
Consumers who file a timely, valid claim form are eligible to receive a pro-rated share of the $3,950,000 settlement fund, after deductions are made for attorneys’ fees and other expenses related to the litigation, the website relays. It adds that individual payout amounts will depend on the total number of valid claims that are submitted.
Furthermore, class members are entitled to one year of free data privacy protection with Privacy Shield, which has a retail value of $300, the settlement agreement states.
“Privacy Shield is being made available to promote privacy consistent with [the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act] and not because of any concerns about the security or disclosure of data collected by Samsara Dash Cams,” the website explains.
The deal with Samsara received preliminary court approval on June 12, 2025. Next, the court will determine whether to grant final approval to the terms of the settlement at a hearing on October 16, 2025.
According to the agreement, should the deal receive ultimate approval, dash cam settlement checks will be issued to eligible class members within 18 days following the date it goes into effect. The Privacy Shield service will be available for enrollment between November 18, 2025 and February 16, 2026 and will be active for 12 months from the date of enrollment, the site says.
The settlement agreement resolves the lawsuit against Samsara, which claimed the company violated the Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), a state law that regulates the collection of biometric data—including facial geometry—by private companies.
