SSRI Users May Still Experience Depression Symptoms: Study
Last Updated on June 27, 2017
A new study found that patients being treated with antidepressants may still experience symptoms of depression. The study, which was published in an April issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, found that 75% of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) users still battled depression symptoms which should have been alleviated by the medication. Insomnia, sadness and an inability to concentrate were among the symptoms still suffered by SSRI patients, according to the study.
The most common symptom experienced by Celexa users was insomnia, followed by sadness and decreased concentration.
Researchers from the University of Texas examined patients taking Celexa for depression. Upon examining the patients for the 16 most common signs of depression, researchers found that 75% of Celexa users still experienced five or more symptoms of depression. The most common symptom experienced by Celexa users was insomnia, followed by sadness and decreased concentration. Celexa belongs to a group of drugs known as SSRIs, which also includes Lexapro, Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil.
The study, which questions the efficacy of SSRIs, further highlights the safety concerns surrounding antidepressant drugs. Reportedly, SSRIs have been linked to a number of dangerous side effects, including Lexapro birth defects and Zoloft cardiac defects, and women delivered injured children after taking these drugs may have legal recourse.
