Issue #307

Undisclosed Ingredients in Your Sunflower Snacks?

In this issue, we’ll cover two new investigations: one involving a popular snack that’s usually considered to be healthy and the other looking into whether certain foreign healthcare workers were recruited in the states under potentially illegal contracts. You’ll find all the details below.

As far as recently filed cases are concerned, 3M is facing a lawsuit over the chemicals applied to certain consumer products, while a popular pharmacy chain is in legal hot water over a first aid staple. Keep reading for the latest.

Toxic Heavy Metal in Your Sunflower Seeds, Butter?

If you bought sunflower seeds or sunflower butter, you may have got more than you paid for, but not in terms of a good bargain. Reports have surfaced that, unbeknownst to shoppers, certain popular sunflower snacks contain excessive levels of cadmium, a known carcinogen. Attorneys want to hear from California residents here.

Immigrant Healthcare Workers: Restrictive Contracts?

Recruited to work in the U.S. as a nurse or other healthcare professional? If your contract seems a little too harsh (e.g., you can’t leave your job or must pay a large fee if you do), you’ll want to check out this investigation. Attorneys are looking into whether some companies are violating the Trafficking Victims Protection Act when hiring immigrant workers. You can find the details on this page.

3M, Chemours Face Lawsuit Over PFAS in Rugs, Carpets
According to the suit, the companies in question have for decades made PFAS-containing stain and soil repellants and sold them to carpet manufacturers to use without disclosing their dangers. As a result, the case says, adults and children have unknowingly inhaled “toxic carpet dust” from rugs in homes, offices and (most concerningly) daycare centers. Read up on the allegations here.
Lawsuit: Walgreens Adhesive Bandages Contain Toxic Forever Chemicals
The recently filed lawsuit claims that Walgreens has failed to tell shoppers that several of its store brand bandages contain “extremely high levels” of PFAS. The case adds that there is no known safe level of PFAS exposure due to the significant risk they pose to humans, particularly children and the elderly. Read up on the case and view the products mentioned here.
