Shrimping Industry Loss of Business Lawsuits

The shrimp industry is a vital part of the economy in Gulf Coast states such as Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. However, shrimpers are currently facing significant economic losses as a result of the BP oil spill. Like other businesses and workers that depend upon the Gulf of Mexico's natural resources, shrimp harvesting companies and shrimp fishermen are faced with lost revenue, lost wages, and an uncertain future in the aftermath of this environmental disaster. Although the long-term effects of the oil spill are unknown, Southern Shrimp Alliance Executive Director Jon Williams has stated that it could be "one year, two years or 40 years" before the Gulf shrimp population is fully restored.

Effect of the Gulf Oil Spill on Shrimp Fishermen

The long-term effects of the oil spill on the shrimp population in the Gulf remain to be seen, but it may take years for the shrimping industry to recover from the damage done by the BP oil spill.
