Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether legal action can be taken on behalf of consumers with devices affected by the Belkin Wemo shutdown.
The electronics company announced in July 2025 that it would no longer support many of its Wemo products beginning on January 31, 2026. This means that after this date, numerous smart home devices—such as light switches, smart plugs, kitchen appliances, heaters and more—will not be controllable through the Wemo app, and features that require cloud connectivity, like remote access and voice assistant integrations, will no longer function. This includes connected features such as Google Home and Alexa.
A list of devices affected by the Wemo cloud service shutdown can be found on this page.
The attorneys have reason to believe that Belkin’s decision to terminate technical support for its older Wemo products may violate users’ rights—and if so, those who take action may be able to recover the cost of replacing their devices, as well as any damages provided under state and federal law.

According to Belkin’s announcement, certain Thread-based devices will not be impacted by the Wemo end of service.
The company states that users whose devices are still under warranty on or after January 31, 2026 and who have proof of purchase may be eligible for a partial Belkin Wemo refund beginning on that date.
How Could the Belkin Wemo Shutdown Break the Law?
Wemo products and other “smart” devices depend on cloud-based services and companion apps to connect to the internet and operate their advertised features. If cloud service is discontinued, any functions that rely on online connectivity—such as remote access, data syncing or integrations with other devices—can stop working entirely. If a manufacturer does not clearly disclose how long it plans to maintain cloud service, consumers may purchase a smart device without realizing they could lose access to key features down the line.
In a November 2024 study, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) staff reviewed the web pages of 184 smart products and found that almost 89 percent did not disclose how long the manufacturer would support their device’s software.
According to the FTC’s report, “[i]f a manufacturer fails to disclose how long it will support a product, consumers have no way of knowing how long the product will last—or how long it will work as intended or marketed,” making it difficult for shoppers to understand what they’re getting or evaluate their options.
Based on the study’s findings, the FTC wrote that when products are sold with written warranties, failing to tell consumers how long support will last may violate the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, a federal law that requires companies to spell out the nature and scope of what their warranties cover.
Per the FTC, the failure to provide information about product support could also qualify as an unfair practice under the FTC Act if it causes unavoidable consumer harm without sufficient offsetting benefits.
Am I Signing Up for a Belkin Wemo Lawsuit?
No, you’re signing up to participate in a process called mass arbitration. This allows many consumers to pursue individual arbitration claims against the same company simultaneously.
Unlike a class action lawsuit, mass arbitration occurs outside of court and is handled by a neutral third-party arbitrator rather than a judge or jury. This sets it apart from traditional litigation, which typically involves filing a lawsuit and potentially going to trial.
Rather than filing a conventional lawsuit, attorneys working with ClassAction.org are addressing this issue through mass arbitration.
Does This Cost Money?
No, it doesn’t cost anything to sign up. The attorneys are paid only if your claim is successful, and their fee will be a percentage of any award you receive.
How Much Could I Get?
Outcomes vary, and there is no guarantee that your claim will succeed or that you’ll receive any money. However, consumers who take action under state and federal law may be able to recover the cost of replacing affected Wemo products, plus any damages they may be legally entitled to.
