Western Montana Mental Health Center Security Incident: What Happened?
Western Montana Mental Health Center, which offers behavioral health services and substance abuse treatment programs, recently reported that it discovered a network disruption on September 15, 2024. Following an investigation of the incident, the Montana-based healthcare provider determined that certain files had been accessed by an unauthorized third party. Around May 27, 2025, Western Montana Mental Health Center learned that the potentially compromised files contained personal and protected health information.
Information that may have been involved in the Western Montana Mental Health Center data breach includes names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, dates of birth, state or federal identification numbers, medical information, financial account details and health insurance data. The facility stated that not every category of information was exposed for all individuals involved.
According to a report submitted to the Maine Attorney General’s office, a total of 86,758 people have been impacted by the incident. Western Montana Mental Health Center is notifying affected individuals of the potential exposure of their personal information.
