University Credit Union Security Incident: What Happened?
In November 2025, Marquis Software Solutions, a marketing and communications vendor for University Credit Union (UCU), reported that it was the victim of a ransomware attack.
The company detected suspicious activity on its systems on August 14, 2025 and commenced an investigation with the help of cybersecurity experts. A review of the affected files indicated that the Marquis Software Solutions data breach may have exposed information received from the vendor’s customers, including University Credit Union, a financial cooperative that primarily serves university communities, students, alumni and staff. University Credit Union’s own systems were not compromised in the incident.
According to a letter sent to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office, the personal information that may have been involved in the data breach included names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, taxpayer identification numbers, financial account information and dates of birth.
Data breach notices, a sample of which can be seen below, were sent to affected individuals beginning in late November 2025.
