UNFI Data Breach: What Happened?
Case Update
July 8, 2025 – UNFI Data Breach Update: Core Systems Restored After Cyberattack
United Natural Foods has reported that it has restored its core systems and brought back online its electronic ordering and invoicing systems in the wake of the June 2025 UNFI cyberattack.
In a June 26 statement, UNFI stated that it has “safely restored the core systems” used by its retail customers and suppliers and overall contained the incident. The grocery wholesaler also said that it has resumed delivering products to grocery stores across its network “at more normalized levels” since the cyberattack, which UNFI disclosed on June 9.
In a new Form 8-K submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Providence, Rhode Island-based UNFI disclosed that it experienced “reduced sales volume and increased operational costs” as a result of the cyberattack and that it is “reasonably likely” that the incident will materially impact its bottom line for the fourth fiscal quarter of this year.
In the SEC notice, UNFI also stated that it “does not anticipate sending any notifications to individual consumers” at this time given that the cyberattack “did not involve a breach of security of personal information or protected health information, as those terms are defined at law.”
UNFI employs roughly 28,000 people and delivers fresh and frozen products to tens of thousands of locations in the United States and Canada.
On June 5, 2025, wholesale grocery distributor United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) discovered unauthorized activity affecting its information technology systems. According to a June 9, 2025 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, UNFI activated its incident response plan and temporarily took certain systems offline, which affected its ability to fulfill and distribute customer orders. The company is working with third-party cybersecurity experts and has alerted law enforcement.
An investigation into the potential UNFI data breach is still in an early phase.
According to BleepingComputer.com, no ransomware outlets had claimed responsibility for the breach as of June 9, 2025, and the company has not yet revealed whether any data was stolen.
