Trinity Health Security Incident: What Happened?
Trinity Health, a healthcare system encompassing 92 hospitals across 25 states, has acknowledged a potential data breach involving Health Gorilla, an entity that manages data exchange requests for other companies.
A sample notice submitted to the Vermont Attorney General’s Office (pictured below) states that on January 13, 2026, Trinity Health was informed by its health information exchange partner of a possible unauthorized disclosure of patient health information. According to the letter, Health Gorilla represented that patients' information was needed by other companies for treatment purposes, but the health information exchange was unable to confirm whether the recipient companies were authorized to obtain the data.
The information disclosed in the potential Trinity Health data breach may include clinical care details, demographic information, insurance details, and potentially driver's license numbers.
Epic Systems, joined by Trinity Health and other healthcare providers, filed a lawsuit against Health Gorilla claiming unauthorized access to Epic's electronic health records system. Health Gorilla denies these allegations.
