Sturgis Hospital Data Breach: Lawsuit Investigation

Sturgis Hospital Security Incident: What Happened?
Sturgis Hospital, which is based in Sturgis, Michigan, has reported to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that 77,771 individuals may have had their personal and protected health information exposed in two data security incidents.
According to a notice posted on the hospital’s website, unauthorized activity was detected in part of its computer network in December 2024. Third-party cybersecurity experts were brought in to investigate the Sturgis Hospital data breach, and during the inquiry, additional unauthorized activity was identified in June 2025.
Investigations of both incidents found that a limited amount of patient and employee information was potentially compromised, including names, contact details, government ID numbers (such as Social Security numbers), financial account data (such as bank account numbers), health insurance details, prescriptions, treatment records, and other clinical information.
