Starkville Utilities Security Incident: What Happened?
Starkville Utilities, a public water and electric utility serving residences, businesses, and Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi, has disclosed a data breach involving potential unauthorized access to personal information. Detected on October 23, 2024, the incident prompted Starkville Utilities to sever network access and enlist a third-party cybersecurity firm for investigation and security measures.
The investigation concluded on December 11, 2024, revealing an unauthorized user had limited access to data. A further review identified individuals whose information might have been exposed. On April 7, 2025, Starkville Utilities finalized the list of those affected and is reaching out to notify them. Letters about the data breach incident state that names, addresses and Social Security numbers were potentially compromised.
A report submitted to the Maine Attorney General's Office about the Starkville Utilities data breach indicates that 11,527 people are affected.
