Monroe University Security Incident: What Happened?

Monroe University has reported to the Maine Attorney General’s Office a data breach involving the private information of 320,973 people.

In a notice posted on its website, Monroe University disclosed that an unauthorized third party had accessed certain computer systems between December 9 and December 23, 2024 and obtained copies of files during that period. A review of the affected files, concluded on September 30, 2025, determined that they contained sensitive personal information.

The Monroe University data breach may have compromised names, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, driver’s license and government ID numbers, passport numbers, medical and health insurance information, account or email usernames and passwords, financial account details and certain student data. The impacted information varied by person.

The New York-based university, which has campuses in the Bronx and New Rochelle, as well as on the island nation of Saint Lucia, began mailing notice letters to affected individuals on January 2, 2026.
