Discord Data Breach: Lawsuit Investigation
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed in light of the data breach affecting Discord.
As part of their investigation, they need to hear from California residents who received a notice stating they were impacted.
Discord Security Incident: What Happened?
Communication platform Discord recently reported a data breach involving 5CA, a third-party vendor used for customer service support. Discord's own systems were not impacted, but the breach affected users who communicated with Discord's Customer Support or Trust & Safety teams. Approximately 70,000 users may have had government ID photos exposed, which were used by the vendor to review age-related appeals.
In response to the data breach, Discord revoked the vendor's access and initiated an investigation with a forensics firm and law enforcement. Affected users will receive notification from Discord via email. In addition to the limited number of government IDs, the compromised data may include names, Discord usernames, email addresses, limited billing information, IP addresses and interactions with customer service agents.
The hackers reportedly claimed to have stolen the data of roughly 5.5 million users from Discord's Zendesk support system, though Discord has pushed back on these claims, telling BleepingComputer.com that "the numbers being shared are incorrect and part of an attempt to extort a payment from Discord."
What You Can Do After the Discord Data Breach
If your information was exposed in the data breach and you live in California, attorneys want to hear from you. You may be able to start a class action lawsuit to recover compensation for loss of privacy, time spent dealing with the breach, out-of-pocket costs, and more.
A successful case could also force Discord to ensure it takes proper steps to protect the information it was entrusted with.
