Campbell University Security Incident: What Happened?
North Carolina-based Campbell University has disclosed a data breach involving unauthorized access to one of its cloud-based data storage platforms.
According to an online notice, Campbell University discovered the breach on April 1, 2026, commencing an investigation that determined that from March 31 to April 1, there was unauthorized access to a Campbell system. The information compromised in the Campbell University data breach spans a host of personal, protected health, and financial information.
Personal information that may have been exposed includes names; addresses; Social Security numbers; driver’s license, state identification, passport, student identification, and other government identification numbers; IRS-issued identity protection PINs; parents’ legal surname before marriage; digital signatures; geolocations; and usernames and access information to non-financial accounts. Medical information that may be involved includes admission and discharge dates, death dates, medical record numbers, provider or facility names, medical conditions, diagnoses and treatments, lab results, medications, personal histories, mental health information, dates of service, and health insurance information. Financial information that may be involved includes account information, debit or credit card information, and individual taxpayer identification numbers.
For each person whose information was identified in the affected data set, the categories of data involved vary.
The Campbell University data breach was reported to the Department of Health and Human Services on May 29, but it was first publicly noted on April 12 by the dark web intelligence platform DeXpose. According to DeXpose, threat actor Incransom claimed responsibility for stealing 500 GB of sensitive information from Campbell University.
