BBS Financial Services Data Breach:
Lawsuit Investigation
Attorneys working with ClassAction.org are looking into whether a class action lawsuit can be filed in light of the BBS Financial Services data breach.
As part of their investigation, they need to hear from individuals who received a notice stating they were impacted.
BBS Financial Services, LLC, an accounting firm based in Methuen, Massachusetts, experienced a significant data breach affecting 70,168 individuals. The breach was discovered on January 29, 2024, when it became evident that data had been exfiltrated from BBS's server network, with the perpetrator demanding a ransom for its deletion. The company enlisted the help of legal counsel and forensic experts, while also consulting with the FBI. The perpetrator, identified as BianLian, was determined to be credible, leading BBS to negotiate and pay the ransom in exchange for proof of data destruction.
The BBS Financial Services data breach affected personal information across BBS's services. For individuals involved with the firm's tax preparation and payroll services, exposed data included names, addresses, dates of birth, government IDs, Social Security numbers, and financial account numbers. Individuals whose information was obtained as part of the company's provision of medical billing services may have had their name and address exposed along with insurance billing codes and health insurance details.
Notifications (examples of which can be seen below) were sent in phases, with the tax preparation and payroll group notified by June 18, 2024, and subsequent notifications for the medical billing services group provided in July and September 2024.
If your information was exposed in the breach, attorneys want to hear from you. You may be able to start a class action lawsuit to recover compensation for loss of privacy, time spent dealing with the breach, out-of-pocket costs, and more.
A successful case could also force BBS Financial Services to ensure it takes proper steps to protect the information it was entrusted with.
