Manufactured by Merck, Fosamax is used to treat postmenopausal osteoporosis. Fosamax is a biphosphonate, which treats and prevents bone loss. However, research has shown that drugs containing biphosphonate can cause osteonecrosis, or dead jaw.
Dead jaw occurs when bone tissue in the jaw cannot heal after minor dental work, including tooth extraction, crown placements and root canals. Dead jaw leaves the bone exposed, and may lead to infections, rotting and fractures. Some patients suffering from osteonecrosis may require surgery or lengthy antibiotic treatments. Common symptoms of dead jaw include gum infections, gum swelling, exposed bone, loosening of the teeth or numbness in the jaw.
