DePuy ASR Hip Implant

A Depuy hip implant recall of the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR XL Acetabular System has been issued after the manufacturer received new information which indicated that more patients than expected experienced pain and other symptoms which led to a corrective surgery. According to data from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales, one in eight patients who received the recalled hip implants needed a revision surgery within five years of the initial hip replacement procedure.

Patients who were implanted with a device implicated in the DePuy hip recall may be able to file a lawsuit to recover financial compensation. Do not wait for your hip implant to fail to learn your legal rights. Contact us today for a free case review by completing the form on the right.

DePuy Hip Implant Early Failure

Since 2008, the FDA has received nearly 400 complaints of DePuy hip implant failure of a device which was meant to last approximately 15 years. While the exact cause of the early hip implant failure is unknown, studies indicate that metal-on-metal hip implants can wear quickly. This creates a release of metal ions, which are absorbed by the patient’s body and can lead to bone loss, tissue death, groin pain and other painful reactions.

Signs of an early DePuy hip implant failure may include:

  • Unexplained hip pain
  • Pain upon walking or standing
  • Thigh or groin pain
  • Pain with weight bearing
  • Swelling
  • Difficulty walking

DePuy hip metal poisoning, which can occur with or without symptoms, has also been reported in those with the recalled hip implants. Metallosis results from metal ions being released into the blood stream as the metal-on-metal device wears.

DePuy Hip Implant Lawsuits

Along with the DePuy hip implant recall, DePuy Orthopaedics announced that it would offer financial compensation to patients who had received the recalled hip replacement systems. The company has agreed to cover reasonable medical costs related to the defective hip implants, but does not provide for any other type of compensation. Furthermore, DePuy will only pay for medical expenses not covered by the patient’s insurance. A successful hip implant recall lawsuit, on the other hand, may provide compensation for medical bills, lost wages, disability and pain and suffering.
