Defective Drugs:
Asthma Related Deaths Linked to Advair and Serevent
Advair and Serevent
Advair and Serevent have been prescribed for children and adults living with asthma. These drugs are used in the long term prevention of asthma and have proven to minimize the amount of asthma attacks. Unfortunately, Advair and Serevent increase the intensity of asthma attacks that do occur. Many users of these asthma drugs have died or required hospitalization after experiencing a severe asthma attack. These asthma-related deaths have been linked to the ingredient salmeterol, which is found in both drugs.
In 2006, Advair and Serevent received a black box warning, which indicates the drug may have life-threatening side effects. Then, in 2007, the FDA advised GlaxoSmithKline to include new warnings specifically outlining the risk of side effects in children. The warning also stated that asthma attacks in Advair and Servent users may require hospitalization.
