Birth Defects
According to research, Topamax (generic: Topiramate) has been linked to an increased risk of oral birth defects, including cleft lips and cleft palates. In March 2011, the FDA announced that data from the North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry found that 1.4% of infants exposed to the drug during pregnancy, specifically the first trimester, developed oral birth defects, compared to .38% to .55% of infants exposed to other antiepileptic drugs during pregnancy. Before this FDA announcement regarding birth defects, a small study linked the use of Topamax during pregnancy to an increased risk of birth defects. Specifically, the study, the results of which were released in July 2008, found that infants born to women who used the migraine and antiepileptic drug during pregnancy developed a birth defect at a rate of 11 times higher than the general population of newborns.
