General Motors Accused of Overstating Chevy Sonic Gas Mileage

What do you look for when you’re thinking about buying or leasing a new car? Chances are gas mileage is one of the first things to come to mind. It’s an important factor when it comes to finding out what sort of vehicle is right for you. But what happens when auto companies are suspected of overstating how many MPGs their vehicles actually get? In this instance, a lawsuit happens.
According to a lawsuit filed in New Jersey, General Motors has been exaggerating the Chevrolet Sonic’s gas mileage since 2011. When met with testing from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Sonic routinely underperformed when compared to its advertised 40 miles per gallon. The complaint states that this is a blatant failure to meet EPA standards when it comes to the accuracy of MPG information provided by vehicle manufacturers.
Now, if this sounds familiar, it’s because General Motors has been hit with a suit like this before. Back in June, GM was accused of overstating the gas mileage of certain Chevrolet Traverses, GMC Acadias and Buick Enclaves – for seven years.
Plaintiffs in both cases are seeking class certification, compensation for class members (as well as the option to cancel purchases and leases on affected vehicles), and an order forcing GM to give up all the money it made due to the allegedly false advertising.
