- Additional Details
- TaxMasters Inc. is a tax relief firm that provides IRS representation, IRS tax relief and tax debt resolution services. However, allegations of a TaxMasters rip off have surfaced, claiming that the company engaged in deceptive business practices when assisting customers with their tax problems.
Current and former customers of TaxMasters Inc. may have legal recourse, as a TaxMasters complaint claims that the tax relief firm engaged in deceptive business practices and misled consumers with its advertisements. According to a class action lawsuit filed against TaxMasters, the company deceived vulnerable consumers who sought to address their tax problems, and overstated their ability to reduce consumers’ tax obligations.
TaxMasters Scam Alleged
The TaxMasters lawsuit makes a number of allegations regarding the company’s advertising and business practices. According to the class action lawsuit, TaxMasters allegedly:
- Deceptively advertised its tax and legal services to vulnerable consumers
- Charged hidden fees and money against consumer credit cards
- Promised to eliminated consumer tax debts and failed to do so
- Attempted to obtain compensation from consumers even when services had yet to be performed
- Refused to provide the required 30-day right of cancellation with the full refund required for internet and telephone sales
The TaxMasters class action also claims that the company advertised “free consultations” with a tax consultation. According to the suit, consumers who call the TaxMasters’ toll-free number are connected to a phone representative who proposes a solution to the caller’s tax problems and then obtains the caller’s credit card or bank account information without providing several material disclosures, including the payment of non-refundable fees. The TaxMasters complaint alleges that the representatives handling these calls are not required to have any previous tax knowledge, but rather are encouraged to have a thorough understanding of phone sales and how to close a sale. Allegedly, after presenting a solution to the caller’s tax problem, the salesperson quotes a fee, which can run into thousands of dollars.
