Medical Devices:
Severe Pain Linked to Defective Hip Socket
Zimmer Durom Cup Hip Socket Implant
The Zimmer Durom Cup Hip Implant has been used in more than 12,000 patients across the country. The Durom Cup was intended for younger patients who would outlive a conventional hip prosthesis. Unfortunately, patients receiving the Durom Cup Hip Implant have experienced severe pain after surgery, often leaving them more immobile than before the surgery.
In July 2008, Zimmer Holdings suspended sales of the Durom Cup Hip Implant after many patients reported complications following surgery. A number of patients with the Durom Cup Hip Implant will need to receive additional surgery to have the defective part replaced. According to several doctors, the Durom Cup Hips caused the socket to separate from the bone instead of fusing with it. When these complaints were filed, Zimmer Holdings placed the blame on surgical techniques, rather than a defect in the device.
