Plumbing Fixture Failure and Property Damage

Uponor Pex plumbing fixture failure could potentially cause damage to a significant number of consumers’ property. Cracked, leaking, or burst Uponor plumbing fixtures are likely to result in water damage to the many commercial and residential properties that have them currently installed. Property owners may have experienced damage to walls, flooring, and other personal property in the vicinity of an allegedly defective Uponor Pex plumbing fixture due to the large amounts of leaking water or a burst fitting. Low water pressure is another common issue arising among property owners.

Defects in Uponor’s Pex Plumbing Fixtures?

The lawsuit against Uponor and its wholly owned subsidiary RTI (Radiant Technologies) alleges that the Pex plumbing fittings are defective and susceptible to fracture. Some Pex fittings may have come from the manufacturer with preexisting cracks; one court testimony noted that there were a number of micocracks in some unused Pex fixtures. The fittings may also suffer from a fundamental design flaw in their microstructure that causes Uponor Pex failure after only a few months of use.

Reportedly, Pex fixture problems may be due to a chemical reaction that occurs when the fixtures are exposed to water. The process is known as dezincification, and can lower water pressure to the point of it not reaching appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines. Uponor originally marketed their Pex plumbing fixtures as being longer-lasting and resistant to corrosion. This has not proven to be the case with some consumers, who may have seen evidence of damage as little as one month after installation.

Additionally, the swivel nuts used to install the fittings are allegedly defective, lending more credence to the case for a defective product by Uponor. Hence, many consumers may be interested in pursuing a lawsuit against Uponor.
