Proscar

Proscar

Proscar, a drug used to treat enlarged prostate glands, has been linked to a number of side effects, ranging from problems with sexual functioning to cancer. Specifically, the drug has allegedly been linked to impotence, diminished libido and erectile dysfunction, as well as the development of male breast cancer and prostate cancer in users. Because the manufacturer of the drug may have failed to properly warn patients about these side effects, users who were diagnosed with cancer or suffered from erectile dysfunction or other sexual side effects may have legal recourse.

Sexual Side Effects

Proscar, a higher dose version of hair loss drug Propecia, has been linked to a number of sexual side effects, which many men were led to believe were only temporary. Research suggests, however, that these sexual side effects are persistent, and may continue even after use of the drug has been discontinued. The following are among the possibly permanent sexual side effects:

  • Low libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Orgasm problems
  • Decreased arousal
  • Testicular soreness or pain
  • Ejaculation problems

While the prostate drug's U.S. label indicates that these sexual side effects are reversible, several countries have taken steps to warn consumers about persistent erectile dysfunction and other sexual side effects of Proscar.

Proscar Cancer Risk

In June 2011, Proscar, as well as two other prostate drugs and hair-loss drug Propecia, received label updates to warn patients of the risk of high-grade prostate cancer. According to an FDA warning, research found that Proscar adds to the risk of the aggressive form of the disease, even though it appears to reduce the risk of low-grade prostate cancer. Reportedly, Proscar has also been linked to male breast cancer, which can be indicated by discharge from the nipples, breast lumps, breast pain or other breast changes.

Proscar Lawsuit

Patients who suffered from sexual side effects or were diagnosed with prostate or breast cancer after using the drug may have legal recourse. Potentially, these individuals would be able to participate in a cancer or sexual dysfunction lawsuit to seek compensation from the manufacturer for their alleged failure to warn of side effects.
